The Sunshine Coast hosts very few large businesses, but is proving to be an ideal “incubator” location for small and medium sized and start-up enterprises. Its traditional resource-based economy (forestry, marine industry and gravel extraction) remains strong, although the profile has changed in recent years along with the industries themselves.
Currently, tourism and the service sectors are experiencing strong growth and this trend is expected to continue.
Persephone Brewing and Beer Farm opened its innovative “beer farm” craft brewery in 2013 – partnering with Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living in what has become a very successful social enterprise. Its strong growth now anchors the Coast’s Ale Trail, as 2017 saw two craft breweries open their doors in Gibsons (Gibsons Tapworks and 101 Brewhouse and Distillery) while Brickhouse Cidery began production in Sechelt. In 2018, Bruinwood Distillery (bruinwood.com) in Roberts Creek opened its doors. These industries are drawing a new workforce of young entrepreneurs and skilled artisans to the community.
It’s an exciting time to be building a business on the Sunshine Coast.
