Sunshine Coast Economic Development - British Columbia, Canada

There is strong demand for marine services on the south coast of BC. Competition for available moorage is keen, with most Sunshine Coast marinas reporting waiting lists for permanent berths. Transient moorage is usually available, and savvy marina operators are providing amenities for sophisticated boaters. Most carry some form of accreditation for responsible marine stewardship, with Gibsons Marina recently awarded BC’s only Blue Flag International accreditation for a marina. Under new ownership since 2015, Gibsons Marina plans an extensive expansion and refurbishing program to coincide with The George Hotel development.

In 2013 the Gibsons Landing Harbour Authority opened a sea plane float and a drive-on concrete float with a commercial grade ramp at the main wharf. This is the first phase of a planned harbour expansion with additional floats and a breakwater which will create opportunities for additional marine services, tourism and retail enterprises. Gibsons harbour is home to commercial fishing craft, charter tour operators, pleasure craft, two houseboats and a ferry shuttle to Keats Island – a working harbour by every definition!

Gibsons is home to several internationally-renowned aluminum boatbuilding operations, including Jasper Marine and Coastal Craft, both in Gibsons Industrial Park. A number of marine service businesses for sales, service and transport operate in or near Gibsons harbour area.

Sechelt’s harbour on Porpoise Bay is home to floatplane docks and several private marina faciities. Its calmer waters attract kayak tourism and stand-up paddleboard recreation and instruction, while the more challenging tidal rapids known as Skookumchuck draw more seasoned kayakers to ride its “standing wave.”

Smuggler Cove at Halfmoon Bay attracts recreational boaters to its privately-owned marinas.

Pender Harbour is another “working” harbour, with marinas, marine repair services and chandlery lining the shores of its many bays. Commercial fishing vessels tie up at private residential wharves and at the Government Dock in Madeira Park. Water taxis, charter tour operators, and private vessels all operate from this busy marine hub.

There are many opportunities for any marine service business on the Sunshine Coast, especially for any requiring deep-water access. Hillside Industrial Park has serviced waterfront lots for sale or lease; contact the Sunshine Coast Regional District for more information.
